Judo's Silva gets first gold for Rio Games hosts Brazil

Rafaela Silva won the first gold medal for Olympic hosts Brazil at the Rio de Janeiro Games on Monday, in the women's judo 57-kilo event.

Silva prevailed by a Waza-ri score after thowing Mongolia's Sumiya Dorjsuren a minute into the final, as she fulfilled her Olympic dream in front of a partisan crowd at Olympic Park.

"I'm very happy about the result. I've been training a lot these last few years and the results are showing," she said. "The stadium was shaking, everybody was screaming and cheering me up every minute."

The 24-year-old grew up in a favela and trained in a judo school of Flavio Conte who won judo bronze 2004 in Athens.

She has a tattoo of the Olympic Rings on her left bicep, and a message in Portuguese which translates into: "Only God knows how much I have suffered and what I have done to get here."

Silva was the first judo champion from Brazil in 2013, also in Rio, and took gold the same year at the Pan-American Games.

The bronze medals went to Portugal's Telma Monteiro and 2012 winner Kaori Matsumoto of Japan.

The men's 73kg division saw Japan's Shohei Ono win by ippon over Azerbaijan's Rustam Orujov. Dirk van Tichelt of Belgium and Georgia's Lasha Shavdatuashvili earned the bronze medals.
