Munich area football to go ahead after shooting; 1860 cancel fanfest

Football club 1860 Munich has cancelled a fanfest scheduled for Sunday while lower-league matches in the region will go ahead as planned over the weekend in the wake of the deadly shooting spree in Munich.

"No one in Munich - and no 1860 fan - feels like celebrating thuis weekend," 1860 said on their website Saturday, adding the decision was also taken "out of respect for all the victims, their relatives and all involved."

The Bavarian football federation (BFV) meanwhile said it decided against a cancellation of matches after consultations with local authorities.

But a minute's silence will be observed at all games, which also include a friendly between German champions Bayern Munich and lower league side Landshut later Saturday.

Bayern had tweeted early Saturday: "Our deepest thoughts and sympathies are with all those affected by the tragic events in Munich. Stay safe!"

New Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti said on the same social network: "Very sad... incomprehensible... my solidarity for the victims and families."

Ten people have been confirmed dead in the attack at a fastfood restaurant and a shopping centre near Munich's Olympic Park on Friday; including the suspected shooter identified as an 18-year-old German-Iranian man.

The shooting triggered a series of evacuations and a widespread state of panic across the southern German city.
