Sandra Perkovic wins Olympic gold in women's discus throw

The world's champion in the women's discus throw, Sandra Perkovic of Croatia, won the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday by throwing 69.21 metres, defending the title won at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Perkovic fouled her first two throws as in the previous night's qualifying but in the face of elimination unleashed a throw of 69.21 metres, which was good enough for gold.

Melina Robert-Michon delighted in silver with a French record of 66.73m and reigning world champion Caballero of Cuba took bronze with 65.34m.

Perkovic got the maximum of only two legal throws from the nine in Rio, the third and last in qualifying and the gold medal-winning one.

Perkovic is the second athlete in history who defended the Olympic gold in the women's discus throw. The first was Evelin Jahl of Germany, who first won the medal in Montreal in 1976 and then four years later in Moscow. This year Perkovic won the gold at the European Championship in Amsterdam as well as the Diamond League title.

Perkovic's latest medal is the fourth for Croatia at this year's Olympics (three golds and one silver).
