Real and Atletico Madrid to appeal against FIFA transfer bans

Madrid (dpa) - Real and Atletico Madrid will appeal the transfer bans placed on them by world football body FIFA, the Spanish clubs said Thursday.

Earlier Thursday, the ban for two transfer windows for the Madrid clubs - for January 2017 and summer of the same year - for their signing of foreign players under 18, was ratified by FIFA despite appeals by both clubs.

The ban, which is similar to one imposed on Barcelona in 2015, means the Madrid clubs will not be able to register new players until 2018.

Real and Atletico immediately said they will now appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

In a statement, the European champions described the decision as "deeply unjust and contrary to the fundamental principles of disciplinary law".

Meanwhile, Atletico said: "This club is not in agreement with FIFA's decision, and has therefore decided to appeal against it to the CAS."

FIFA's investigation focused on players aged under 18 who played in competitions for Atletico between 2007 and 2014, and for Real from 2005 to 2014.

"Both clubs are to serve a transfer ban that prevents them from registering any players at national and international level for the next two complete and consecutive registration periods," FIFA said.

Ironically, Real made no major signings this summer, apart from bringing back Alvaro Morata from Juventus and Marco Asension from Espanyol. It was the lowest amount of money spent by Real on signings since 1998.

In contrast, Atletico signed Kevin Gameiro from Sevilla, Sime Vrsaljko from Sassuolo and Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica.
