Russia's Kolodko loses Olympic shot put silver from 2012 for doping

Russian shot put athlete Evgeniia Kolodko is being stripped of her silver medal from the London 2012 Games after a retest of her doping samples found a steroid and a growth hormone, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Saturday.

Kolodko is the latest in a series of Russians who have tested positive for forbidden substances in IOC retests of samples from the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games. The IOC stores samples for 10 years and re-tests with the latest scientific methods.

Kolodko tested positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol) and ipamorelin.

"Evgeniia Kolodko is found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation .... [and] is disqualified from the event in which she participated upon the occasion of the Olympic Games London 2012," the IOC said in a statement.

"The Russian Olympic Committee shall notably secure the return to the IOC, as soon as possible, of the medal, the medallist pin and the diploma awarded in connection with the shot put event to the athlete," it added.

The silver medal is now likely to be awarded retroactively to China's Gong Lijiao, who had taken bronze in the London shot put competition. Fourth-place finisher Li Ling of China would then be promoted to bronze.

Kolodko had first received the silver in London under similar circumstances. She had initially won bronze in the shot put competition, but was promoted to silver after second-place finisher Nadzeya Ostapchuk of Belarus tested positive for an anabolic steroid.

The IOC made Saturday's announcement on the margins of the Rio Olympics, where the 36-year-old Kolodko is not competing.

Russia's entire athletics team - apart from US-based long jumper Darya Klishina - has been suspended for the Rio Games amid accusations of state-sponsored doping in the country.
