Russia's Shtokalov waits on canoe bronze over Tarnovschi dope test

Russian sprint canoeist Ilia Shtokalov must wait to see if he will be awarded the bronze medal in the men's single 1,000-metres race after the doping suspension of a Moldovan competitor, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Friday.

Initially the IOC said Shtokalov had been promoted to bronze the day after the International Canoe Federation gave Moldova's Serghei Tarnovschi a provisional suspension "following adverse results from a pre-competition test."

However, the IOC subsequently corrected the statement, saying the result "remains as originally reported until all the legal procedures have been completed regarding the doping case."

Tarnovschi had finished third behind Germany's Sebastian Brendel and Brazil's Isaquias Quieroz dos Santos on Tuesday, clinching the first medal for Moldova at the Rio Games. Shtokalov had finished fourth in the race.

Brendel heavily criticized Tarnovschi on Friday, calling his behaviour "utterly embarrassing."

"I am pretty angry that something like this happens here, it harms the entire sport," Brendel said. "People like this do not belong here and I hope that we do not see them anymore."

Moldova has been removed from the start list for the 1,000m double canoe race, in which Tarnovschi was due to compete, without a replacement.
