Ruthless Higuain nets brace in first game as starter with Juventus

Gonzalo Higuain scored an early brace for Serie A champions Juventus in Saturday's 3-1 victory over Sassuolo in his first game of the season in the starting line-up.

The Turin hosts moved top on nine points as Argentine Higuain tallied his third goal from as many games, while Bosnia's Miralem Pjanic also struck, making his first appearance as playmaker.

“I have always been calm and knew that if you keep working the goals will come,” Higuain said. “We must work together and keep winning.

“I find myself very well with (Paulo) Dybala. It is important to make the fewer possible mistakes and keep improving. This is the game we must display also in the Champions League.”

Sassuolo missed their striker Domenico Berardi and staggered under the Bianconeri's hammering start but were the first on target when Matteo Politano's low shot was deflected by Gianluigi Buffon, who on six minutes grabbed an attempt from Antonino Ragusa.

Higuain, who set a league record of 36 goals with Napoli last season, stuck to his scoring habits, clinically stunning Andrea Consigli off compatriot Dybala and volleyed home when Sami Khedira set him up with a header on five minutes and slamming home a volley on 10.

A cross from Stephan Lichtsteiner on 27 found Pjanic free to nod against the bar and tap in the rebound, but Juve also came close from a Leonardo Bonucci header.

Buffon fumbled on a corner kick to allow Antei's close-range deflection on 33, but after the break Giorgio Chiellini, Alex Sandro, Lichtsteiner and Khedira threatened Consigli, along with Mario Mandzukic, who came on for Higuain.

The guests missed a late chance when Lichtsteiner cleared a goal-bound shot from Politano.

Napoli play later at Palermo, with eight games set for Sunday and Monday.
