Spain's De Gea says sexual assault claim "is all lies"

Spain goalkeeper David de Gea has denied alleged involvement in a case of sexual assault dating from 2012.

"This is all lies and nothing else," the 25-year-old Manchester United goalkeeper said Friday at Spain's training camp on the Ile de Re off the western coast of France.

Earlier Friday, Spanish websites eldiario and El Confidencial alleged that De Gea might have been involved in a sexual assault in a Madrid hotel involving women allegedly linked to a prostitution ring.

The incident is alleged to have happened with two other players while De Gea was with the Spain Under-21 team in 2012.

"I am really surprised at this news...I have the support of my team-mates. I have left this affair in the hands of my lawyers," De Gea said.

Athletic Bilbao striker Iker Muniain, who was named in Spanish reports as one of the players involved, tweeted that all the allegations were "absolutely wrong."

He said he would release a statement in the next few days "to defend my honour."

De Gea - who was poised to play in holders Spain's Euro 2016 opener Monday against the Czech Republic Monday in Toulouse - denied the possibility that he might have to drop out of the Spain squad because of the allegations.

"This kind of thing just strengthens my desire to play for Spain...I am a very calm person and something that is not true is not going to change that."

Earlier Friday, Spain's veteran striker Aduriz said: "I see De Gea very calm. He has our total support."
