Sundby, Riiber triumph for Norway at Holmenkollen

Norwegians Martin Johnsrud Sundby and Jarl Magnus Riiber earned home Nordic skiing victories at Oslo's Holmenkollen venue Saturday.

Sundby delighted home fans by winning the classic 50-kilometre World Cup men's cross-country ski race in a Norwegian one-two.

World Cup leader Sundby posted 2 hours 8 minutes 41.9 seconds in the mass-start classic-style race, finishing 18.8 seconds ahead of team-mate Niklas Dyrhaug.

Russian Maxim Vylegzhanin was third, 1:05.4 behind Sundby.

The leading 10 comprised five Norwegians and four Russians, with seventh-placed Italian Francesco De Fabiani the best of the other nations.

Sundby has 1,687 points at the top of the standings, ahead of fellow Norwegians Finn Hagen Krogh (967) and Petter Northug (945).

A women's 30km mass start is scheduled at the venue Sunday.

Eighteen-year-old Riiber clinched his first World Cup win with victory in the Nordic combined event ahead of Japan's Akito Watabe and Germany's Eric Frenzel.

Riiber posted a 24:35.0 after the ski jump and 10km cross-country run, beating Watabe by 16.6 seconds, with Seefeld Triple winner and World Cup leader Frenzel 28.2 seconds back.

Frenzel moves to 731 in the overall standings, with Watabe on 634 and Germany's Fabian Riessle on 603.

Slovenia won the ski-jumping team event on the large hill, their first team victory this season.

The quartet of Jurij Tepes, Domen Prevc, Robert Kranjec and World Cup leader Peter Prevc garnered 977.7 points, ahead of Norway (945.3) and Japan (927.2).
