UEFA tells Russia it will be out of Euros if repeat of trouble

Russia's team at Euro 2016 will be disqualified from the tournament if there are further stadium crowd disturbances involving its fans, UEFA said Tuesday.

Russia has a suspended disqualification until the end of the tournament, the disciplinary committee of European football's body said.

The Russian Football Union (RFU) was also fined 150,000 euros (168,000 dollars) in charges relating to crowd trouble inside the Stade Velodrome in Marseille Saturday in the match between Russia and England.

The RFU accepted the ruling and said it would not appeal.

Russian fans were seen to charge a section of the ground housing England supporters directly after the match, and also set off flares.

UEFA said in a statement the suspended disqualification "will be lifted if incidents of a similar nature (crowd disturbances) happen inside the stadium at any of the remaining matches of the Russian team during the tournament."

It added: "This decision only relates to the incidents which occurred inside the stadium and are therefore under the jurisdiction of the UEFA Disciplinary Bodies."

UEFA had already warned both the Russian and English football associations their teams could be disqualified from the tournament if there was further violence outside stadiums.

The sanctions passed by UEFA's control, ethics and disciplinary body met in Paris were on charges "relating to crowd disturbances, use of fireworks and racist behaviour."

RFU president Vitaly Mutko, who is also sports minister, told Russia's TASS news agency "A disciplinary decision has been made and we are waiting for an official notification.

"We will be following the decision of UEFA and there must be no other stance of the RFU."

At Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, UEFA imposed a number of fines on the the Russian Football Union for similar crowd problems. It was also given a suspended points deduction for Euro 2016 qualifying.
