Ukrainian biathlete fails doping test

Ukraine biathlete Olga Abramova was named Tuesday by the country's biathlon federation as the athlete provisionally suspended last week following a doping test at a World Cup event in January.

Abramova, 27, had taken the newly-prohibited substance Meldonium on a doctor's prescription in November 2015, the Ukrainian federation said.

Meldonium, which is clinically used to treat angina and heart attacks, has been prohibited since the start of the year as a performance-enhancing drug.

Abramova was not named by the International Biathlon Union (IBU) when it said last Thursday it had provisionally suspended an athlete following a doping test at a World Cup event in January.

The IBU said the athlete was suspended with immediate effect after the detection of a substance which is new on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list.

A statement said the substance "is defined under hormones and metabolic modulators and it is new on the WADA prohibited list as of 1 January 2016."

The Russian-born Abramova became a Ukrainian citizen in 2012 but was not a member of Ukraine's gold-medal-winning relay team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
