WTA Bol Open to be revived, USD 125,000 prize pool

The WTA Bol Women's Open to be held May 29 to June 5 this year will see 32 tennis players in individual competitions and 16 double's matches competing for a prize pool of $125,000, the tournament's director Feliks Lukas told a press conference in Split.

The women's WTA Bol tournament is being revived after 13 years. The tournament was scrapped in 2003 due to financial difficulties.

"The revival of this tournament in Bol on the island of Brac is of exceptional importance because women's tennis in Croatia is on the rise and this is an opportunity to present our young players. This is also the last opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro," Lukas said.

He underscored that once again the tournament had received support from Novak Djokovic, Groan Ivanisevic and Iva Majoli.

"In cooperation with the Universities of Split and Glasgow a special business conference will be held during the WTA Bol Open to promote entrepreneurship of the young," Lukas said.

He explained that this year's WTA Bol Open had been designed based on European Commission directives which define the priority for the local community to feel the benefits of such an event, not just as far as marketing is concerned but according to its financial impact. A special catamaran service will be introduced from Split to Brac during the competition for visitors.

Lukas added that the costs of organising the competition will amount to four million kuna.

County officials and tourism experts believe this will be a great way to promote the island's tourism. Mayor Tihomir Marinkovic said that the WTA Bol Open was an amazing event because the stadium could seat more spectators than residents on the island.

"Our tennis stadium can seat 2,100 spectators, yet according to the latest census, Bol has 1,630 resident," Marinkovic said, adding that the WTA Bol Open was a great opportunity for Croatian tourism.
