Super confident Croatia ready for Turkey date at Euro

Croatia are super confident going into their first Euro 2016 game against Turkey on Sunday and can go a long way

I hope we can stay in France as long as possible," veteran captain Darijo Srna told a news conference at the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris.

"I think we have one of the best teams in Croatian history but it means nothing. If you are psychologically strong and focused we can beat any one. But if we are not we won't. We have to take it step by step,"

Croatia have an abundance of talent with the likes of Srna, Barcelona's Ivan Rakitic or Luka Modric of Real Madrid but they are yet to really deliver on the big stage in a similar way as the class of 1998 which finished third at the World Cup, also in France.

Earlier exits include a painful penalty shoot-out loss against the Turks in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals, after Croatia had taken the lead in the 119th minute, a loss Srna named "painful for us and our fans" but stopping short of calling Tuesday's date a revenge match.

Their Group D also includes title holders Spain and the Czech Republic which makes a good start even more important.

"Our team is ready and our appetite is big," coach Ante Cacic said. "The first match is very important. With all respect fort Turkey, we have to do a good result."
