Bike Rijeka project wins UNWTO award

The Bike Rijeka project of the Rijeka Tourism Board has won an award from the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) for excellence and innovation in tourism, the Tourism Board in this northern Adriatic city said on Thursday.

The Bike Rijeka project was short-listed for the award earlier this year. At an award-giving ceremony in Madrid, it shared second place with a Korean online platform for medical tourism, while the first place was captured by the Brazilian Itaipu Complex project for promoting territorial development based on tourism.

The Bike Rijeka project was launched in June 2014 to link the existing cycling lanes with a newly-designed one to connect all the communities in the Rijeka area. The project also finished second at the Tourmap Festival in Prague in July 2015, receiving an award for electronic maps and tourist guides.
