14 dead in tour bus crash in central Japan

Fourteen tourists were dead and 27 injured after a bus plunged off a road in central Japan early Friday, the government said.

The bus carrying 39 passengers and two drivers veered off the road, breaking through the guard rail around 2 am (1700 GMT Thursday), authorities said.

The accident occurred in Karuizawa town, 120 kilometres north-west of Tokyo, Kyodo News agency reported.

Video footage showed the overturned bus with its windows broken and the body dented in the woods along the road.

The cause of the accident was not yet known.
