28 killed in airstrikes on rebel-held areas in Syria, monitor says

At least 28 civilians were killed on Wednesday in airstrikes by unidentified warplanes on two rebel-held towns in Syria, according to a monitoring group.

The toll included 16 people killed in air bombardment on a market in the rebel-held town of al-Rastan in the central province of Homs, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Twelve others, including three children, were killed in airstrikes on a market in the rebel-controlled town of Ariha in the north-western Idlib province, said the Britain-based watchdog, which relies on a network of activists inside Syria.

Footage posted online by activists showed rescuers removing rubble in the area in search of survivors.

The strikes are the latest in a string of air attacks that have caused civilian deaths in recent weeks in war-torn Syria.

On Tuesday, unidentified warplanes struck a refugee camp near Syria's border with Jordan, killing at least three civilians and injuring 21 others, according to the watchdog.

The al-Hamad refugee camp is home to people displaced by fighting in the province of Deir al-Zour in eastern Syria.

They are mainly relatives of fighters from the self-styled opposition group the Eastern Lions Army, who fled Deir al-Zour after the Islamic State extremist militia seized parts of the province in 2014.
