Aleppo bombings kill 25 people, rescue group says

Twenty-five people were killed in airstrikes on eastern Aleppo on Wednesday after dozens lost their lives the previous day in what appeared to be Russian and Syrian government airstrikes, rescuers said.

The Wednesday strikes hit a market area in the rebel-held al-Fardous district, the White Helmets rescue group said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed at least seven deaths in Wednesday's strikes, as well as 27 on Tuesday.

Rescuers were at risk of death because strikes continued to hit the area after they arrived to administer aid to the wounded, White Helmets press officer Ibrahim al-Hajj told dpa by phone from eastern Aleppo.

A local medical doctor sent journalists what she said was a picture taken from the door of her clinic, showing a bulldozer moving rubble.

"[S]o many people are still under the [rubble], even the man whom I used to buy coffee from," she wrote.

The renewed shelling came amid a war of words between Russia and Western countries over the situation in Aleppo, Syria's largest city before the five-year civil war.

Russia intervened in Syria a year ago to prop up al-Assad's crumbling army, and its air campaign has enabled government forces to reclaim territory from both rebels and the Islamic State extremist group.

Some 250,000 to 300,000 civilians are thought to be trapped in eastern Aleppo, with dwindling food supplies and extremely limited medical care in underground hospitals that have themselves repeatedly been hit in airstrikes.
