Alleged US airstrike kills 22 in Somalia

Regional officials in Somalia said Wednesday that 22 members of local security forces died in a friendly-fire airstrike by US warplanes on a village in central Somalia.

The planes attacked Godad village east of Galkayo town overnight, also injuring 16 people and destroying four military vehicles, according to officials in Galmudug region.

The strike prompted demonstrations from locals, with official Abdirahman Mohamed Ahmed describing it as a "terrible accident."

Regional Security Minister Osman Isse Nur said he had evidence that the attack was carried out by US planes acting on false information that al-Shabaab militants were based in the village.

The United States supports Somalia in its fight against the Islamist group. dpa was unable to reach the US Africa Command for comment.

A senior Somali intelligence official meanwhile said that four Islamists were killed in US airstrikes on Kanjaroon village in the south on Monday.

Al-Shabaab uses the village as a training and operational base, said the official, who asked not to be named.
