Austin police launch manhunt after shootings leave one dead

Police in Austin, Texas, said they were scouring the US city for an armed suspect early Sunday after two separate shootings left one woman dead and five others injured.

Police received multiple calls beginning at 2:17 am (0717 GMT) of shots being fired on Sixth Street following "a disturbance between multiple individuals," Austin police chief Staff Brian Manley told reporters.

A suspect then opened fire into a crowd, killing a woman in her 20s and injuring four others.

"We are still actively looking for a shooter," Manley said.

Three women in their 30s were transported to the University Medical Centre Brackenridge with serious but non-life threatening injuries. A fourth person who was injured refused transport, Manley said.

Shortly afer, police received a call reporting an separate assault in a parking garage in which a gunman fired at another person.

A man in his 20s, believed to be the second shooter, was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries suffered after witnesses saw the shooting and disengaged him, Manley said.

Police had initially tweeted that there were "multiple victims" from an "active shooter incident" in the centre of Austin, and asked people to stay away from the area.

Police were seeking information and videos on the shooting from the public.
