Australian election result in limbo, possibility of hung parliament

Australia faces a strong possibility of a hung parliament with neither of the top two parties garnering enough seats to form a workable government, election results showed Sunday.

With 77 per cent of votes counted, the reigning Liberal coalition led by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is neck and neck with Labor led by opposition leader Bill Shorten, with 67 seats for each party.

Eleven seats are too close to call. The Greens have won one, while four seats are held by the independents.

More than 10 million voters cast their votes on Saturday to choose representatives for both the lower and upper houses of the parliament.

Any party trying to form a government will have to win 76 seats in the 150-seat lower house.

In the doubtful 11 seats, Labor leads in six contests. However analysts say the trend could easily be reversed because the pre-poll and postal votes that are left to counted have traditionally favoured the Liberals.

Projections claim the most Turnbull can hope for is 74 seats, which would force him to cut a deal with the independents and minor parties to get back to power.

A final result is likely to be unknown until later this week.
