Australian police conduct operation in Sydney Opera House

Australian police said Thursday they were conducting an operation in Sydney Opera House and in a nearby neighborhood, without giving any further information.

"A police op is currently underway in the #Sydney CBD & #Manly. As the operation is ongoing, no further info is available at this stage," New South Wales police said in their Twitter feed.

"The 1:20pm Manly to Circular Quay ferry has been cancelled due to a police operation at Manly. Passengers can catch the 1:40pm service," the state transport authority said in their Twitter account.

Local television channel 9news showed people being escorted out of the premises and the whole area being cordoned off.

A worker at one of the restaurants at the opera house told dpa that the police had told them all to leave the area as soon as possible at around 2 pm.
