Bosnian authorities to penalise websites that propagate radicalism and violence

Authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH) intend to target websites that propagate radicalism and use hate speech as part of the strategy to combat terrorism, the Banja Luka based Nezavisne Novine daily reported on Monday.

The strategy, adopted by the BH Council of Ministers for the period until 2020, foresees the establishment of mechanisms and procedures over the next two years to monitor websites that incite to terrorism and radicalism.

The measures concern penalties for network providers of websites and portals of this nature which could be stripped of their licences.

Assistant Security Minister Vjekosav Vukovic said that talks were currently in progress on how to implement this segment of the strategy. He noted that for some time now there were websites in BH with clearly impermissible content.

"If you search for 'Put Hilafeta', for instance, you will clearly see agitation to certain activities in Bosnia", Vukovic said. That site is just one of many in BH that extensively deal with the terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS) and openly propagate its activities and the need for Muslims to join in the Jihad.

Also well known is the Vijesti Ummeta website which justified the assassination of Croatian citizen Tomislav Salopek in Egypt in August.
