Bridge collapse in Bali kills eight, injures 30

At least eight people are dead and 30 injured after a bridge collapsed in Indonesia's resort island of Bali, an official said Sunday.

The bridge, which connects Nusa Lembongan Island and Nusa Ceningan Island in Bali's Klungkung district, collapsed at 6:30 pm (1030 GMT) as a large number of people observing a local tradition were crossing, according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

No foreigners were among the victims and injured. "They are all locals," Nugroho said, citing a preliminary report.

Three children were among the dead and have all been identified, while the injured, including two seriously injured, have been taken to local medical facilities, he added.

Nugroho said there were a large number of people on the bridge due to Balinese observing rituals for Nyepi Segara Day, during which devotees avoid the sea and thus take the bridge, which he said, began to shake just before it collapsed.

A search and rescue operation was called off at dark and is to resume Monday morning.
