Clinton: "Now it's our turn to stand with Europe"

Former US secretary of state and Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton called Wednesday for the US to stand with its European allies in the wake of terrorist attacks in Brussels.

"Now it's our turn to stand with Europe," Clinton said, recalling European support following the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States.

"When it comes to the struggle against [Islamic State], we need our allies as much as ever," Clinton said, lauding NATO in particular as "one of the best investments the US has ever made."

She called for a recommitment to NATO and other US alliances after Republican front-runner Donald Trump called Monday for a reconsideration of the US commitment to the North Atlantic military alliance.

The United States needed help from European intelligence agencies, banks, militaries and diplomats in combating the threat and supporting other allies in the Middle East and elsewhere, she said in remarks at Stanford University in California.

She also called on Europe to do more to share the burden with the US by increasing spending on defence. The European Union needs greater cooperation on intelligence sharing about the flow of foreign fighters and a shared coast guard and border patrol, she said.
