Egyptair flight resumes after bomb hoax forces Uzbekistan landing

An Egyptair plane en route from Cairo to Beijing made an emergency landing in Uzbekistan Wednesday following a bomb threat that turned out to be a hoax, the state-run airline said.

"Three hours after the plane left Cairo airport, authorities at the airport received an anonymous call about a security threat to flight 955," Egyptair said in a statement.

The pilot was alerted and asked to land at the nearest airport. The aircraft, carrying 118 passengers and 17 crew members, subsequently landed at Urgench airport in Uzbekistan.

It resumed its flight to Beijing after four hours.

"Uzbek authorities reviewed all security measures. The plane was searched and the threat was found out to be false," Egyptair said.

Egyptair has been subjected to several bomb hoaxes since one of its jets carrying 66 people crashed in the Mediterranean Sea last month while en route from Paris to Cairo.

Search teams have since been hunting for the jet's two black boxes to determine the cause of the disaster.

The crash came almost six months after a Russian passenger jet broke up mid-air shortly after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, killing all 224 people on board.

Russian authorities said that the incident was caused by a bomb. The Islamic State extremist group, which operates in Sinai, claimed responsibility and published a photograph of a soft drink can which it said had been filled with explosives and smuggled onto the flight.
