Fifteen Turkish soldiers killed in clashes with Kurdish militants

Fifteen Turkish soldiers have been killed in clashes with Kurdish militants in the east and south-east of the country, local officials said Saturday.

Eight soldiers were killed in fighting in the mountainous area of Van province, the provincial governor said.

The state news agency Anadolu reported that 13 fighters from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) were captured during the clashes and many were killed, without giving exact numbers.

Seven more soldiers were killed in skirmishes in south-eastern Hakkari province and 20 injured, Anadolu reported.

Kurdish militants and state security forces have fought daily since a ceasefire broke down a year ago.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict during the past three decades, mostly in the south-east of Turkey, which is largely Kurdish. The minority group makes up an estimated 15 per cent of the population.
