There were gaps and weaknesses in Turkey's intelligence services in the lead up to last week's failed coup attempt, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says.
He adds that other countries have experienced attacks as a result of similar gaps.
"It is difficult to always point weak areas in nations," Erdogan says in an interview in Ankara with al-Jazeera's English-language broadcast.
He also said that other countries may have been involved in the coup attempt and that any such connections will be revealed as investigations progress.
