EU to suspend FARC from terrorist list upon signature of peace deal

The European Union will suspend the FARC guerrilla group from its list of terrorist organizations after it signs the peace treaty with the Colombian government, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini says.

"Exactly today, [EU governments] will take the decision to suspend FARC from its list of terrorist organizations. This decision will take effect upon the signature of the peace agreement," she says in a statement.

The EU is also ready to provide an aid package worth 600 million euros (676 million dollars) to offer Colombia support, notably to help it implement the peace deal, Mogherini adds.

Colombia is "sending a message of hope to the rest of the globe" by showing that "peace is possible and can become reality, with leadership and determination," she says.

FARC has been blacklisted by the EU since 2002.
