Five arrested after mob attack on African woman in India

Five men have been arrested after a mob attacked and stripped a female Tanzanian student in south India, officials said Thursday.

Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said she was deeply pained over the "shameful incident" in Bangalore city, considered India's IT capital.

The crowd attacked the 21-year-old woman and her three Tanzanian friends shortly after another African student's car ran over and killed a local woman on Sunday.

Bosco Kawesi, legal advisor to the All African Students Union, said the woman and her friends who were also travelling in the area in a car, had nothing to do with the accident but the mob dragged them out of the car and beat them.

When the woman tried to board a bus to escape, the passengers pushed her out, he said.

Five men had been arrested in the case, the region's home minister, G Parameshwara told reporters, adding a probe had been ordered. He said it was not a racial attack.

Police officials said the student's top was torn and removed but there was no sexual assault.

A Sudanese student who ran over the Indian woman on the weekend was reportedly in police custody.

Tanzanian envoy to India John Kijazi told broadcaster NDTV that the woman and her friends were attacked "simply because they were black."

"This should not happen in the 21st century. All those who discriminated against the students should be brought to justice," Kijazi said, adding New Delhi had promised action against the attackers.

Swaraj had asked authorities to ensure stringent punishment for the guilty and provide for the safety of foreign students in Bangalore. Police said more arrests were likely.
