A former Iraqi soldier suspected of war crimes was arrested in south-western Germany, prosecutors announced Monday.
Authorities in Karlsruhe took the 27-year-old man into custody after a federal court issued an arrest warrant for him on Friday.
Photographs from 2015 show the man holding the severed heads of two dead soldiers, who belonged to the extremist Islamic State group, by their hair after combat.
In doing so, the man degraded and demeaned people protected under international humanitarian law, the Federal Prosecutor's office said. The photos were published on a social media site.
It was unclear why the man was in Germany.
