French tourist found dead at bottom of cliff in Nepal

The body of a French woman, who had been missing for the last 10 days, has been found at the bottom of a cliff near a highway in western Nepal, local police said Friday.

The body of the 35-year-old woman, who has been identified by police as Melanie Guerin, was found near the Siddhartha highway, Bir Bahadur Pulami, Syangja district’s superintendent of police, confirmed to dpa.

"The search and rescue team used ropes to reach the site. Her body was badly decomposed, her face was unrecognizable. Her friends identified her through her bracelets," Pulami said.

He said the woman's body had been sent to a state-run hospital in Kathmandu for a postmortem.

A Romanian woman, who was trekking in Nepal's popular Annapurna trekking region, was also found dead near a hiking trail last month.

Foreign trekkers and tourists are lured to Nepal by its snow-capped peaks and centuries-old heritage sites.

Last year’s devastating earthquake on April 25 dealt a huge blow to tourism, which is still struggling to recover.
