Germany's Steinmeier: Trump is a "hate-monger"

US presidential candidate Donald Trump is a "hate-monger," German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Thursday, expressing his concern about the spread of the "monstrosity of nationalism" around the world.

Speaking at an election campaign stop in the city of Rostock in northern Germany, Steinmeier said "hate-mongers," who in his opinion included not only Trump but the political backers of Britain's exit from the European Union and Germany's xenophobic AfD party, made political capital out of people's fears.

Calling the politics of fear an "incendiary device for society," the centre-left politician said "one can, one must extinguish this incendiary device in the voting booth."

AfD - the Alternative for Germany - is one of the parties contesting September 4 local elections in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern where Rostock is located.
