Hillary Clinton names former Virginia governor Kaine as running mate

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has selected US Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia as her vice presidential running mate.

"I'm thrilled to announce my running mate, @TimKaine, a man who's devoted his life to fighting for others," Clinton said on Twitter.

Kaine, 58, previously served as governor of Virginia, which is expected to be a battleground state in the November election, from 2006-10. Prior to that he was mayor of the state capital, Richmond.

Clinton describes Kaine as "a relentless optimist who believes no problem is unsolvable if you put in the work to solve it."

She chose him over other candidates such as Senator Elizabeth Warren, Agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack, Senator Cory Booker and Labor Secretary Tom Perez.

Kaine responded to his selection with a message on Twitter: "Just got off the phone with Hillary. I’m honored to be her running mate. Can’t wait to hit the trail tomorrow in Miami!"

Kaine has described himself in interviews as the "happy senator" and even "boring." In an interview Monday with US public television broadcaster PBS Clinton agreed and said, "I love that about him."

"He’s never lost an election. He was a world-class mayor, governor and senator, and is one of the most highly respected senators I know," she said.

Kaine's fluency in Spanish is also expected to help attract Hispanic voters, and his regular-guy presence could cancel out Clinton's high unfavourable ratings. She is among the least-liked major party candidates in decades, according to public opinion polls.
