Hundreds evacuated in Sydney during extreme storms

Floods caused by severe storms caused evacuations of some areas of Sydney on Sunday, officials said.

Extreme winds and torrential rain have lashed the coast since Saturday morning, prompting about 500 people across New South Wales to leave their home and seek shelter, according to the police and emergency services.

Emergency Services received more than 5,500 calls for help in New South Wales, and authorities performed 105 flood rescues - half of them stranded motorists.

Sydney transport officials said the weather had caused some delays and cancellation of trains and buses.

More than 28,500 homes and businesses were without power, according to energy providers Ausgrid and Endeavour.

Social media was inundated with photos and video clips of high tides, violent wind, soil erosion and flooded streets in Sydney.

"Torrential rain and damaging winds are expected in the entire coast over the next 12-24 hours," New South Wales emergency commissioner Greg Newton said Sunday morning.

"This will lead to localised flash flooding and the risk of drivers being caught in floodwater," he said, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

The Bureau of Meteorology said up to 200 millimetres of rain was measured in some areas of suburban Sydney, as well as destructive wind with gusts of 125 kilometres per hour.

A 13-metre wave was recorded at a coast north of Sydney.

"It's not a day to be on or near the water," meteorologist Adam Morgan said.

New South Wales police said they rescued and charged a woman with drink-driving after she became trapped in floodwaters in Sydney.
