Indian capital launches car restriction plan to curb pollution

Authorities in New Delhi Friday launched a plan to limit the number cars on the roads to tackle alarming levels of pollution in the city.

Under the 15-day trial initiative, private cars are being allowed on the roads on alternate days depending on whether their number plate ends with with an odd or even number.

"The reports we are receiving are that, by and large, Delhi has accepted the new rule. Till now, there have been few violations," Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal told reporters.

The restrictions will be implemented from 8 am to 8 pm on all days except Sunday. Violators will be fined 2,000 rupees (30 dollars).

Emergency vehicles like ambulances, fire engines, police cars and taxis have been exempted from the rule.

Two-wheeled vehicles as well as those running on compressed natural gas have also been exempt. The new rule will also not apply to women and senior officials.

The Delhi government has hired around 3,000 private buses and will issue permits for more auto-rickshaws to cope with the anticipated spike in passengers.

The Indian capital, with an estimated population of 17 million, was the most polluted city in the world in 2014 according to the World Health Organization.
