Iran wants to build two new nuclear power plants with China's help

Iran would like to construct two new nuclear power stations with the help of China, the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization said on Tuesday.

"The details will be discussed at the meeting of the two presidents in Tehran," Ali Akbar Salehi told IRNA news agency with reference to the upcoming meeting between Iran's Hassan Rowhani and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at the weekend.

Following the finalization of the nuclear deal with six world powers in Vienna last weekend and the lifting of sanctions on Iran, the country is now planning nuclear energy projects with international partners.

Salehi said that in addition to China, Russia, some European countries, Japan and South Korea are also interested in cooperating with Iran in nuclear energy.

According to President Rowhani, China enjoys a privileged position in Iran. "We never forget the friends who stood by us even in the bad times," he said.

For this reason China has a strategic meaning for Iran beyond being just a leading trading partner, he said, adding that bilateral ties should be further expanded at the upcoming presidential summit.
