Islamic State claims attack on Pakistani consulate in Afghanistan

The Islamic State militant group has claimed responsibility for a four-hour siege upon the Pakistani consulate in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad that claimed 10 lives.

A Twitter account belonging to Abu Uthman, an Islamic State affiliate said "Islamic State fighters killed some apostates near Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad."

Seven security forces personnel and three attackers died, while 10 members of the security forces and three civilians were injured, according to Ataullah Khogyani, spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar province.

"All Pakistanis at the consulate are safe. We are in touch with our people there and they have been taken to safety," said Qazi Khalilullah, a spokesman for Pakistan's Foreign Ministry.

The attack began with a suicide bomber blowing up an explosive-laden vehicle near a police vehicle, as two other attackers entered an empty guesthouse near the Pakistani consulate, according to a statement by the Afghan Ministry of Interior.

The assault on the Pakistani consulate came just 12 days after the Indian consulate in Mazar-e Sharif, the capital of Afghanistan's northern province of Balkh, was attacked, resulting in the death of one Afghan security forces member and nine others suffering injuries.

Islamic State has been active in southern parts of Nangarhar for at least a year, fighting with Taliban and Afghan government forces.
