Islamic State supporters claim deadly bombings in coastal Syria

Islamic State supporters on social media are circulating a claim of responsibility for the bomb attacks that killed more than 100 people in the Syrian coastal cities of Tartus and Jableh.

"Attacks by Islamic State fighters hit gatherings of Alawites in the cities of Tartus and Jableh on the Syrian coast," the statement reads, referencing the Alawite sect of President Bashar al-Assad with a strong presence in coastal Syria.

dpa cannot independently verify the claim, which is ascribed to Islamic State's Aamaq news agency.
