Israeli army strikes in Gaza Strip after rocket attacks

Israeli army artillery and war jets struck targets belonging to Hamas militants in the northern Gaza Strip, injuring at least one person on Sunday.

Israeli drones bombed a military post that belongs to Hamas militants near the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun, security sources in the Hamas-ruled territory said.

The sources and eyewitnesses said that Israeli artillery fired at least six shells on open areas in the town, causing severe damage to the town's main water tank and homes.

Gaza health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qedra said that one person was moderately injured in the artillery strikes and was immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital.

The attacks were carried out immediately after unknown militants fired around four rockets from the area into southern Israel.

Israeli media said one rocket caused no injuries but caused damage to two buildings in the southern Israeli town of Sderout. No one claimed responsibility for the rocket attack.

The Israeli army confirmed that its forces struck targets belonging to Hamas militants in northern Gaza Strip in response rocket attacks. No injuries were reported in southern Gaza.

The Israeli army said militant members of the Palestinian left-wing group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) were responsible for the attacks from northern Gaza.

August 26 will mark two years since the end of the 50-day Israeli large-scale war waged on the coastal enclave during the summer of 2014. Around 2,200 Palestinians and 70 Israelis were killed.
