Israeli army tears down West Bank residence of Palestinian prisoner

The West Bank home of a Palestinian prisoner accused of helping plot the 2015 killing of an Israeli pair in front of their children was destroyed Tuesday by the Israeli army, a spokesman said.

The army issued video footage of soldiers knocking down the walls of an apartment belonging to Amjad Eleiwi, who is serving two life terms plus 30 years in jail for his involvement in the attack on a West Bank road near the northern West Bank settlement of Itamar.

A gunman had opened fire on an Israeli vehicle, leaving the two adults dead and injuring their four children, ages 4 months, 4, 7 and 9 years old, according to the army.

The apartment is in a six-storey building in the northern West Bank city of Nablus. Witnesses said the army had evacuated the entire building before knocking down the walls manually, a process that took several hours, the Maan news agency reported, adding that 10 young men were injured after clashes broke out during the demolition.

The army had previously destroyed the homes of two other Palestinians involved in the attack.

Human rights groups have slammed the demolition of the homes of attackers by Israel as collective punishment, illegal under international law.

Israel insists that the punishment deters potential attackers who are willing to sacrifice their own lives to kill Israelis in "acts of resistance," by making them aware their families would pay the price and lose their homes.
