Israeli soldier filmed shooting knife attacker after threat ends

An Israeli soldier was filmed Thursday shooting a Palestinian attacker in the head, as he was lying injured on the road, no longer posing a threat.

The footage was filmed by a Palestinian volunteer for the Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem.

Fatah a-Sharif and Ramzi al-Qasrawi, both 21, were shot as they as they lunged at an Israeli soldier in the West Bank, stabbing and injuring him, the military said.

The Israeli soldier was guarding a checkpoint inside the divided southern West Bank city of Hebron.

As the soldier is being evacuated in an ambulance in the video, the two knife attackers are seen lying on the road.

A close-up shows one of them still somewhat moving, injured but with no visible head wound.

A soldier suddenly raises and aims his rifle, then a shot is heard. The Palestinian's head jolts and he suddenly has what seems to be a fresh head wound, with blood slowly streaming down the sloped road where he lies.

"A preliminary investigation indicates that this is a severe event which goes against the spirt of the Israel Defence Forces and against what is expected of Israeli soldiers and their commanders," an Israeli military spokesman told dpa.

An investigation has been opened into the incident, which was reported by the soldier's commanders, the spokesman said.

The soldier has been suspended, he added.
