Kerry: Initiative in "next day or so" will kick-start Syria talks

US Secretary of State John Kerry says he is confident that Syrian peace talks, originally slated to start Monday, will begin soon.

"We are confident that, with a good initiative in the next day or so, those talks can get going," Kerry said after meeting Gulf foreign ministers in Riyadh.

A first round of "proximity talks" between Syrian government and opposition representatives would immediately be followed by a meeting of the International Syria Support Group, which includes the US, Russia and other key backers of the sides in the conflict, Kerry said.

"We want to keep the process moving and put to full test the readiness and willingness of people ... to begin the process of bringing the transitional council, the transitional governing process of Syria, into a reality," Kerry said.
