Kerry warns Turkey not to overreach as it goes after coup plotters

US Secretary of State John Kerry warns Turkey not to overreach as it responds to a military coup that failed last week.

"We ... urge the government of Turkey to uphold the highest standards of respect for the nation's democratic institutions and the rule of law," Kerry says after meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

"We will certainly support bringing the perpetrators of the coup to justice, but we also caution against a reach that goes well beyond that," he adds.

Kerry also calls on the Turkish government to "maintain calm and stability throughout the country."
