Kurds say they've withdrawn from Minbij, handed over to local council

The main Kurdish force in northern Syria says it has handed over control of Minbij city, west of the Euphrates River, to the local council.

The People's Protection Units (YPG) said the handover was done on August 15, when the city was declared liberated from Islamic State, but its fighters are ready to support the local council in the future "in the case of any attack."

The Minbij Military Council had been set up ahead of the launch of the operation to take the city from Islamic State back in June. The operation was supported by the United States.

Turkey says the deal was that the YPG would retreat after the city was taken and handed over to a local group.
