At least 11 killed during rebel attack on refugee camp in CAR

Members of the largely Muslim Seleka rebel group killed at least eleven people in a refugee camp in the volatile Central African Republic, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in CAR (Minusca) said Saturday.

More than ten others were injured when the rebels attacked a refugee camp in the northern town of Ngakobo in the country's north, according to Minusca chief Parfait Onaga-Anyanga.

Witnesses told dpa they heard gunshots from the early hours of Saturday morning. The rebels also set parts of the camp on fire, according to witness reports.

"The population got into a panic and tried to flee," resident Modeste Yacoub told dpa.

Earlier this week, about 30 people were killed when Minusca peacekeepers clashed with Seleka fighters in the nearby town of Kaga-Bandoro

The diamond-rich but poverty-stricken CAR was plunged into more than two years of lawlessness after Seleka overthrew Christian president Francois Bozize in March 2013.

Since a new government was elected in February with President Faustin Touadera at the helm, the situation in the landlocked country somewhat stabilized.
