At least 20 dead in two suicide bombings in Afghanistan

At least 20 people have died and more than 50 others have been injured in two suicide bombings in Afghanistan's Kunar and Kabul provinces.

A suicide bomber blew up his explosives-laden motorcycle in Asadabad, the capital of Afghanistan's Kunar province, early on Saturday, killing 11 civilians and wounding 40 others.

The suicide bomber successfully targeted Haji Khan Jan, a Kunar tribal elder who had orchestrated a local uprising against the Taliban in his home district of Dangam.

The second suicide bomber blew himself up near the entry gate of the Afghan Ministry of Defence in Afghanistan's capital of Kabul, killing 9 and wounding 13 others.

Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in Kabul, saying the suicide bomber - Mohammad Yosuf Abdullah - had "killed 23 military officers and [wounded] 29 others."

Seaparately, the Afghan army freed 35 prisoners from a Taliban prison and arrested seven militants during an operation in Nad Ali district of Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province.

"Five women, five men and 25 children were released from Taliban captivity last night while the Afghan army arrested seven other Taliban members," the Defence Ministry said on its Facebook page.

Helmand is one of the most restive provinces in southern Afghanistan with all but three districts either heavily contested or under full control of the Taliban.

The Afghan army this week pulled out its last contingent of troops from the deserts of Musa Qala and Nawzad. It said the move was part of efforts to intensify operations elsewhere in the province - especially the provincial capital, Lashkargah.
