At least 22 killed in Yemen triple attack claimed by Islamic State

At least 22 people were killed and scores of others injured Friday evening in three attacks that targeted Saudi-led alliance and Yemeni government forces in Yemen’s temporary capital Aden, an official source told dpa.

Three car bombs targeted different checkpoints near the headquarters of the Saudi-led alliance in the southern Yemeni city, while coalition forces intercepted a fourth car before it reached the premises, said Nizar Anwar, spokesman for the local authority in Aden.

Many civilians were among the killed and injured, Anwar said, adding that the number of casualties is expected to rise due to the severity of the injuries.

Islamic State terrorist militia claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement circulated on social media that could not be independently verified by dpa.

Yemen has been in turmoil since September 2014, when Iran-backed Shiite Houthi rebels overran the capital Sana'a and began making advances in the country.

Saudi Arabia and its allies, mainly Sunni Gulf countries, launched an air campaign in March 2015 against the rebels who control large parts of Yemen.

Saudi Arabia fears that the rebels will give its regional rival Iran a foothold in the Arabian Peninsula.
