At least 24 insurgents reported dead after attack on Cameroon village

At least 24 Islamist insurgents from the Boko Haram group were killed after they attacked a village in the far north of Cameroon, the commander of the west African country's anti-terrorism unit told dpa on Wednesday.

The attack, which took place in Wambache on Tuesday night, was repelled by Cameroonian soldiers serving in a multinational task force, Colonel Joseph Nouma said.

"The task force killed 24 Boko Haram insurgents. Two soldiers were wounded," Nouma said.

The insurgents also attacked the locality of Mozogo, where they killed three people, including the son and a friend of local Muslim leader Malloum Hamizou, and torched several homes, he said.

No civilian casualties were reported in the attack on Wambache.

Last month Cameroonian soldiers crossed the border into the Nigerian village of Kirawa-Jimni in Borno State, killing 70 people who they believed were Boko Haram members.

It was reported later, however, that the 70 people were villagers.

Cameroon government spokesman Issa Tchiroma Bakary denied the accusation, saying that the soldiers worked closely with Nigerian forces and that those who were killed were effectively Boko Harm soldiers.

In November, Cameroon Defense and Security forces launched a special operation in collaboration with the Multi-National Joint Task Force of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, which ended with the killing of hundreds of Boko Haram fighters and the freeing of over 900 hostages.

Boko Haram's attacks have killed thousands in north-east Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger and impoverished the region by driving tens of thousands from their homes and destroying the infrastructure.
