At least eight killed as Islamic State gunmen storm Baghdad mall

At least eight people were killed and 20 injured on Monday when gunmen set off a car bomb in eastern Baghdad and stormed a shopping centre, police and eye witnesses said.

A car bomb exploded near the Jouhara Mall in the New Baghdad district. Three attackers armed with guns and hand grenades and wearing explosive belts then attacked the mall, according to police sources and witnesses on the scene.

One police official, who asked not to be named, said 10 policemen were killed in the attack. He added that the gunmen took some 40 civilians hostage before being killed by security forces.

The Islamic State extremist organization claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was targeting Shiite Muslims.

New Baghdad is a religiously mixed area but has a Shiite majority.

Baghdad sees frequent bomb attacks, mostly targeting Shiite areas and thought to be mainly the work of Islamic State.

Hours later, a suicide bomb attack in the city of al-Muqdadiyeh, north-east of Baghdad, left 19 people dead and 35 injured, a police official said.
