At least six killed in suicide attack near Jordanian-Syrian border

At least six people were killed and 14 others injured in a suspected terrorist attack Tuesday near the Jordanian-Syrian border, almost two weeks after a similar assault targeted a post of the intelligence services in Jordan, the Jordanian army said.

According to local news sources, the attack targeting a military site was carried out using a booby-trapped car.

The site serves Syrian refugees in a camp in al-Ruqban, a city about 8 kilometres west of the meeting point of the Iraqi, Syrian and Jordanian borders, the statement added.

The victims are mostly army personnel, the statement said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

On June 6, five people were killed when gunmen attacked a post of the intelligence services north of the capital Amman.

The attack took place near a Palestinian refugee camp on the first day of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month.

Jordan is generally a stable country, surrounded by neighbours in turmoil, including Iraq and Syria. The security forces have cracked down on Islamic State sympathizers since the group rose to prominence in 2014.
